INTERVIEW with Morgann Mobry, Director at TACTIC TALENT: Navigating Talent Gaps Complexities of IT SaaS Recruitment in 2024

APG74 had the pleasure of interviewing Morgann Mobry, Director at TACTIC TALENT, about the complexities of finding the ideal candidate in the IT SaaS (Software as a Service) sector in 2024.

Welcome, Morgann. Can you tell us why finding qualified talent in the IT SaaS sector is so challenging?

Thank you for having me! Finding qualified talent in the IT SaaS sector is indeed a challenge! it’s rare, but not impossible! The challenge comes from a few different factors.

First, there’s a high demand for those skills, and companies are all fishing from the same limited talent pool. Then, there’s the fast-paced nature of the tech world; technologies evolve so quickly that today’s hot skills could be outdated in a few years. This means that candidates need to be constantly learning and adapting.

Also, SaaS roles often require a unique mix of technical knowledge and soft skills. You need someone who can not only code up a storm but also communicate effectively, collaborate across teams, and understand client needs.

Let’s not forget the cultural fit! The SaaS world thrives on innovation and agility, so you need people who are not just technically sharp but also culturally aligned with the company’s values and goals.

With such high demand, how competitive is the market for attracting this talent?

Companies are rivaling for the same pool of skilled professionals, and they’re not just offering competitive salaries. They’re throwing in remote work flexibility, cool perks like unlimited PTO, learning opportunities, and those funky offices with bean bags and free snacks (though, let’s be honest, the real draw is the remote work and flexibility these days).

Startups and tech giants alike are trying to outdo each other, not just with compensation but with their culture, mission, and vision. Candidates know they have options, and they’re not just looking for a paycheck, they’re looking for a place where they feel valued, can grow, learn, and make an impact.

Plus, we’re seeing a lot of “passive candidates”, those who aren’t actively looking for a job but are open to the right opportunity. This means recruiters have to be on their A-game, constantly networking, nurturing relationships, and selling their company’s unique value proposition.

Technology evolves rapidly; how does this impact the recruitment of IT SaaS professionals?

As technology advances, the skills required by companies change fast, very fast! Today, you might need someone who’s an expert in Kubernetes and Docker, but tomorrow, it could be all about AI and machine learning frameworks. This constant evolution means that the talent you’re looking for is always shifting, and it requires a recruitment strategy that’s agile and forward-thinking. Therefore, the best candidates aren’t just the ones with the right skills today, they’re the ones who are lifelong learners, curious, and quick to adapt. They need to be comfortable stepping out of their comfort zones and continuously learning new technologies, frameworks, and methodologies. So, instead of looking for “perfect” candidates, we’re often looking for “potential”,  those with the aptitude and attitude to grow with the tech.

Then there’s the fact that professionals in this field are highly aware of the latest trends and market demands. They’re not just thinking about what skills are in demand right now but also what will keep them relevant and competitive in the next 5 or 10 years. This makes it important for companies to offer not just a great job today but a career path with growth opportunities and continual learning.

Finally, tech evolution affects recruitment because companies need to move fast. If you take too long to make an offer, you might lose out to a competitor who’s already snapped up that top candidate with a cutting-edge tech stack and an irresistible offer.

What roles do cultural fit and adaptability play in recruiting for IT SaaS roles?

In the dynamic SaaS world, things are constantly changing : new features, products, and market shifts. Hiring someone who’s technically skilled but can’t adapt is like hiring a race car driver who struggles with sharp turns. They might handle straight paths well, but when things get twisty, they falter.

Cultural fit is equally crucial because SaaS thrives on collaboration, innovation, and agility. It’s not just about skills; it’s about aligning with your company’s values and work style. A lone wolf might struggle in a team environment that relies on cross-functional collaboration.

A strong cultural fit keeps employees engaged and motivated, which is essential in a high-pressure, quick-moving environment. Adaptability is key because technology constantly evolves, requiring people who can quickly pivot, embrace new tools, and change direction as needed.

Hard skills open the door, but cultural fit and adaptability keep you thriving in the ever-changing SaaS landscape. It’s about finding people who not only play the game well but enjoy playing it with your team.

Recruitment processes can be lengthy and complex. How does this affect securing talent?

In today’s competitive market for IT SaaS talent, speed is important. Great candidates are like rare gems, they don’t stay available for long. If your hiring process is slow, with too many interviews or decision-makers, you risk losing top talent to quicker competitors.

A lengthy process can frustrate candidates, making them feel undervalued. In contrast, an efficient process shows confidence and interest, sending a positive message. A drawn-out process can also hurt your company’s brand, making you seem bureaucratic or indecisive, not ideal in a fast-moving SaaS environment!

The key is finding a balance be thorough but efficient. Clear communication, setting expectations, and a streamlined process with the right people involved will help you make faster, smarter hiring decisions.

Finally, could you share some strategies that might help companies overcome these challenges?

Absolutely! Overcoming these recruitment challenges requires a mix of creativity, strategy, and a touch of boldness. Here are a few strategies that can help companies attract and secure the best IT SaaS talent:

1. Build a Strong Employer Brand: Promote your company’s unique culture, values, and successes on social media and other platforms. Show candidates why your company is an exciting place to work.

2. Speed Up the Recruitment Process: Streamline your hiring process by reducing interview rounds, using automation tools, and keeping communication clear and quick to show candidates you value their time.

3. Focus on Candidate Experience: Treat candidates with respect and provide a positive, engaging recruitment experience. Even if they aren’t hired, a good experience can lead to future interest or referrals.

4. Embrace Remote and Hybrid Work: Offer remote or hybrid options to expand your talent pool and appeal to candidates looking for flexibility and a better work-life balance.

5. Invest in Upskilling and Continuous Learning: Provide training and development opportunities to attract candidates who want to grow and to retain your current talent by showing commitment to their career growth.

6. Leverage Employee Referrals and Networks: Encourage employees to refer candidates from their networks, as they often know people who would fit well with your company’s culture.

7. Use Data-Driven Recruitment: Use data to pinpoint where your hiring process can improve, such as optimizing job descriptions or refining interview techniques.

8. Offer Competitive Compensation and Benefits: Provide appealing packages that go beyond salary , include flexible hours, wellness programs, and other benefits that cater to candidates’ needs.

9. Highlight Career Growth and Impact Opportunities: Show candidates how they can grow and make an impact in your organization, which can be more attractive than just a high salary.

10. Be Open to Non-Traditional Backgrounds: Consider candidates with diverse skills and experiences, not just those who fit the perfect mold. Fresh perspectives can drive innovation.

11. Maintain a Talent Pipeline: Keep a pool of potential candidates by staying engaged with passive talent, attending industry events, and networking regularly, so you’re ready to fill roles as soon as they open.

These streamlined strategies should help companies tackle the challenges of IT SaaS recruitment more effectively! And remember that your don’t have to do it alone, whether you are looking for tech, sales or operational roles you can let professionals like Tactic Talent handle it for you.

Thank you, Morgann, for these insightful perspectives on the recruitment challenges and strategies in the IT SaaS sector for 2024.
